Notes

  1. Because of the reduced parallax in LCD monitors, most users find that the 15" version of the LCD monitor running at 1024x768 pixels resolution gives more than adequate room for the POS display. However, CRT monitors are (at the moment) less expensive than LCD monitors, so for budgetary reasons the CRT type may be preferable.

Generally, buttons to be displayed on a CRT type monitor should be larger than buttons on an LCD monitor (because of the increased position error induced by parallax), so a 17" monitor is recommended.

  2. We recommend using a thermal printer because of the high printing speeds possible with these printers. Duplicates of receipts and other forms printed on the receipt printer are generated by the POS system where required. For low-volume operations where budget is an overriding consideration, a dot-matrix receipt printer could be substituted.

  3. Green fee tags are generally printed on a specialty label printer. Typically these tags are printed on self-adhesive, thermal-coated stock.

  4. A UPS is essential to keeping your computer operating continuously. You should have a UPS for each physical location where you are installing a workstation or server, with enough power reserve to keep the workstation or server operating for at least twenty minutes.

  5. This configuration assumes that the data will be physically stored on the administration office PC which does double duty as both a workstation for the manager and as a server for the other workstations. We recommend that you install two hard disk drives on that machine and you use a Windows Server product since these products provide disk mirroring capability to maintain a continuous backup.

  6. Kitchen printers can (and should) be inexpensive dot-matrix receipt printers. These printers typically make a fair bit of noise while printing, which alerts the kitchen staff to an incoming order. Speed of printing is not the issue in the kitchen that it is in the pro shop where you want to clear transactions in a matter of seconds.

Advantage Database Server

It is highly recommended that all users of the software purchase and install the Advantage Database Server from Extended Systems Inc. The Advantage Database Server provides a true client/server database engine. Both Society Manager and AISA are client/server ready. If the Advantage Database Server is found on the network, Society Manager and AISA will automatically use that Server engine.
